1/4” = 1’-0” scale model at the Rabozaal, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands
This set design of Oedipus Rex is situated in the Rabozaal at the International Theater Amsterdam, exposing the theater’s glass and steel back window. At the heart of the design is a floating frosted glass box, symbolizing both the royal palace gate and Oedipus's inner thoughts.
The stage floor is scattered with ashes, broken plaster, and plaster-cast bodies and limbs, evoking the imagery of the bodies preserved in Pompeii, representing Thebes in the grip of a plague. This visual arrangement creates a distinction in height between the floating glass box, where the royalty resides, and the plague-ridden ground, where the commoners are placed. As the play progresses, and the moment of revelation for Oedipus arrives, the front of the glass box closes, and blood begins to seep out, gradually filling the box and symbolically drowning Oedipus.
The chorus stands on the balcony, with their lines projected onto the theater's back wall, adding a dynamic narrative layer. At the climax, the top of the glass box rises, allowing the blood to flood onto the stage floor, contaminating the land and exposing Oedipus at the center. This moment portrays Oedipus as covered in blood, symbolizing his rebirth through the painful realization of truth.
The box’s top, resembling a womb, hovers above, continuously dripping blood in the final scene, emphasizing Oedipus’s rebirth from the revelations.
